Yep, this fishing tournament is for LADIES ONLY!  I guess we will let the men drive the boat and mate for us, but leave the fishing to us girls. Every year the Old Salts host their Ladies Fishing Tournament at the Madeira Beach Marina and this year it is coming up soon … September 8 & 10th, 2016.

“We get together for 2 main purposes … Fishing and raising awareness for Ovarian Cancer”, says tournament director Jill Foraker.

Over the past years we have raised over $80,000 for the Celma Mastry Ovarian Cancer Foundation.  It is a local non-profit whose fundamental objective is to support efforts for early detection, when ovarian cancer is treatable.  Our goals are to prompt legislative action, share information, raise awareness, promote education and share resources.

The fishing is a fun way to raise awareness.  It has some basic rules like woman only, must use hand held rods and reels, etc., but overall is a fun easy way to show support for the cause.  There are 9 species this year to fish for ranging from Inshore to Offshore: Sheepshead, Flounder, Sea Trout, Redfish, Snook, Snapper, Red Grouper, Gag Grouper and Kingfish.  You can fish from land, kayaks or boats.  It is an individual tournament even though many ladies will band together and fish on the same boat.  For a full list of rules – click here.

It starts with Thursday night an Angler’s Party.  This is where you check in or register to fish, get your goody bags, ask any questions on the rules and get ready to fish.  It also is great for fun for those non-fishing gals with an awesome raffle, silent auction and of course great food and drink specials.

Fishing starts Saturday early morning at 12:01 with the weigh in opening at 4pm.  All ladies that want to weigh fish need to be checked in and in line by 5pm.  Of course there will be more raffle items to take a chance on and watching the ladies weigh their fish is always fun.
