Best Trout Winner – Old Salt Photo of the Week

00-PW-TroutCongratulations to Mike Eldridge for winning the best Trout photo this week.  He caught this slob of a trout in the upper Laguna Madre, South Texas.  He said he was about to call it a day and saw a sand pot hole with bait so he made one last wade.

Trout can be found in fresh and in salt waters.  There are many species of trout and are a commonly found fish.

The spotted seatrout, also known as speckled trout (Cynoscion nebulosus), is a common estuarine fish found in the southern United States along coasts of Gulf of Mexico and South Atlantic Ocean. While most of these fish are caught on shallow, grassy flats, spotted seatrout reside in virtually any inshore waters, from the surf of outside islands to far up coastal rivers, where they often come for shelter during cold weather. Contrary to its name, the spotted seatrout is not a member of the trout family (Salmonidae), but of the drum family (Sciaenidae). It is popular for commercial and especially recreational fishing in coastal waters of the southeastern United States. Adults reach 19-25 inches in length and 3-17 pounds in weight.

Trout is the name for a number of species of freshwater fish belonging to the genera OncorhynchusSalmo and Salvelinus, all of the subfamily Salmoninaeof the family Salmonidae. The word trout is also used as part of the name of some non-salmonid fish such as Cynoscion nebulosus, the spotted seatrout or speckled trout.

Most trout such as lake trout live in freshwater lakes and/or rivers exclusively, while there are others such as the rainbow trout which may either live out their lives in fresh water, or spend two or three years at sea before returning to fresh water to spawn, a habit more typical of salmon. A rainbow trout that spends time in the ocean is called a steelhead.

Trout are an important food source for humans and wildlife including brown bearsbirds of prey such as eagles, and other animals. They are classified as oily fish.
