North winds bring cooler weather and incredible fishing in Tampa Bay. After a long, hot summer, most Floridians welcome November climate changes. Furthermore, our fishery thrives when water temps reach the low 70’s. The battle lately has been high winds keeping the bay pretty rough the last few weeks. Luckily, we have been prepared with our “skinny” water boat and the shallow water fishing has been great. We are finally seeing some strong negative tides and coupled with the lower temperatures, fish have made a big push to back country bays, creeks, rivers, and residential haunts claiming their spots for the next few months.
Water clarity has improved drastically which is a good indicator that the winter months are upon us (or at least what we know as Floridians) For me, Redfishing inshore has been our main target. We have still been able to find the bigger schools when the conditions are right but things are changing daily as our weather patterns shift. As we move towards December, our focus will shift to more Snook, Trout, & Grouper on the days we can get out in the bay. Bait has started to thin out on the flats and started to stack up on the deeper range markers and bridges. However, this is the time of year where you can put together productive days on the water with artificial baits also. The decreasing abundance of shallow water bait will have hungry fish foraging for anything that moves until water temperature drop into the 60’s for a good period of time.
As we push into the holidays and winter fishing season. I can’t stress enough about safety on the water. With vacations coming up and a lot of folks itching to hit the water, please be mindful of the weather reports and tides when planning your trips. They will play a major role in the fishing conditions, especially this time of year. Always check the wind strength and direction forecast to get a better idea of what you will be up against. In most cases, the weather will dictate the trip.
