Fishing for Trash
This past Saturday, September 17th, was the inaugural Madeira Beach Amphibious Trash Round Up.
So what does the “Amphibious” in this instance mean? Well, it means we scoured both water and land for trash. Old Salt Fishing Foundation partnered up with the City of Madeira Beach to have a trash clean up that included boats and foot service. Mad Beach is fortunate, every month, to have a great local group The Trash Pirates, out in force collecting as much garbage as possible from our beaches and parks. The Amphibious Trash Round Up focused on cleaning Madeira Beach waterways and the adjacent land.
Mad Beach & Old Salt were blessed to have over 100 volunteers (thank you all) out “fishing for trash” on Saturday. We awarded prizes for eight different categories of trash collected, provided a tasty lunch for everyone and had many great local businesses provide support and gift certificates for prizes.
The amount of garbage pulled out of our waterways was huge and no small feat for the volunteers. The trash haul included many strange items: toothbrush, bible, office chair and even a guitar case. There were over 5 dumpster worth of trash by days end.

This was so much fun and rewarding doing good in our community. We will be making this an annual event so stayed tuned for the next one!
