The 2016 Fall King Was A Little Different This Year

They entered the tournament, paid the fees, fished, weighed, partied (a little) and walked across the stage to receive their just rewards. Similar as it all was, this years King was indeed different.

Not Just A King But, A Queen As Well

We would be utterly remiss if we didn’t acknowledge the special nature of this years winning team in the Overall Division. Crowned “The King” our winners thiskinandqueen year, Kyle & Jenny Applefield – Team Loaded Down (Loaded Down Sportfishing) are a two person, husband and wife, fishing team.

After a ragged start to the day (someone kyped their bait), a full day of fishing in a single engine craft in sketchy weather and standing in the weigh-in line behind every other team, …. when their King Mackerel was placed on the scale the whole tournament field erupted at the result. The husband-wife team weighed a 44.7 lb King Mackerel winner taking the crown and a total of $70,780 in winnings. The Applefields are a perfect representation of the anglers Old Salt engages with and aspires to effectively represent. Good folks! Congratulations.

A New Partnership, Driving The King To New Heights

The Old Salt King of the Beach has gained a bit notoriety outside of our regional area. Anglers from as far away as Texas, the Florida Panhandle, Georgia & the Carolinas and beyond are expressing greater interest in fishing the King. We’re on the map, in at least a small way, it seems.

To further our efforts, to reach and attract fishing teams from across the S.E. United States, Old Salt Fishing Foundation has partnered with Visit St. Petersburg Clearwater (Pinellas County Convention & Visitors Bureau). VSPC’s mission is to attract new visitors to our area, building and sustaining thevspc-title tourism market. Old Salt has the objective to grow the number of travel teams that fish our tournaments. The affinity between our organizations is obvious.

VSPC stepped in as the Title Sponsor for the 2016 Fall King of the Beach bringing a wealth of talent & resources to bear on our behalf. VSPC helped us reach anglers in “out of area” markets while Old Salt introduced our partner to tens of thousands of of the same. A true win-win.

Old Salt and VSPC are slated to work together in 2017 on the Baddest BBQ on the Bone Fishing Slam and we expect the partnership to grow, encompassing additional opportunities in the future. Thank you VSPC.

Darcizzle Fishes The King

Old Salt works with, and is sustained in no small part by, our Lady Anglers. Darcie Arahill or Darcizzle as she is know to hundreds of thousands of YouTube, Facebook and Instagram users is a lady angler who has taken the industry by storm through grit, determination, skills, bikinis and a crack video productiondarcie-1 team (Brian). Darcie posts lifestyle & educational fishing videos & pics all across social media, sometimes daily and at least 3 times every week.

Darcie fished the King with Captain James Lowe, Lowe Tide Charters & Team Central Marine (they weighed & placed with in the Spanish Mackerel Division… see here ) and she also had the opportunity to spend a day fishing the waters of Tampa Bay with Captain Ryan Harrington of Reel Estate Charters.

We had a ton of fun with Darcie and Brian, they brought a real spark to the tournament and we encourage you to check her stuff out on social media. With a little luck and planning we will see them both back in the Spring…..

The 2016 Fall King is in the books. Old Salt is closing out 2016 and readying ourselves for a busy and fish filled 2017. We appreciate all of you who volunteer, fish the tournaments, donate to our programs and generally work to keep our mission alive. Have a wonderful holiday season, merry Christmas and happy New Year. See you in the Spring
