Old Salt had the pleasure of providing a group of local youngsters with some summer camp fishing in Madeira Beach this July. In concert with Madeira Beach Recreation, Madeira Beach Marina, 13 Fishing, Fish Florida , Squid Ink Productions , Ricks Rods and 18 Old Salt volunteers we able to get 100 kids (ages 6-14) fishing. These children are all in the summer camp program run by the Madeira Beach Recreation department. This is the 3rd year in a row Old Salt has been able to hold a summer camp fishing day for the kids.
Summer Camp Fishing Program
The fishing took place over a two day span on the seawall behind the rec center and on the R.O.C. Park Memorial Pier. Partners, 13 fishing and Fish Florida teamed up to put rods w/reels and tackle boxes in every child’s hands (theirs to keep). Rick’s Rods provided all of the tackle itself while volunteers cut bait, baited hooks, helped and encouraged the kids for a fun day of fishing. Over 120 volunteer hours were donated assembling & rigging rods, cutting bait, helping the kiddos fish, removing fish off hooks, running a safety boat – patrolling the seawall and more. Efforts like summer camp fishing for kids is a significant part of the Old Salt mission.
We want every child we interact with on outings like this to have a great day, fishing. More, we truly hope the experience might help shape the growth of these children leading some (dare we hope all?) to a lifetime passion for fishing and everything that entails.
In addition to the Summer Camp Fishing Program Old Salt donated $5,000 to Madeira Beach Recreation this spring.: $2,500 for field maintenance and $2,500 for Summer Camp outings: Hubbard’s boat trip and Clearwater Marine Aquarium trip.
Old Salt works closely with the City of Madeira Beach. The foundation is headquartered there and our largest tournaments are held in Madeira Beach as well. This is home and it has been for over 45 years.
