Old Salt Fishing Foundation Gets Kids Fishing at Summer Camp

Group1The Old Salt Fishing Foundation took Madeira Beach Recreational Summer Camp Program classes fishing not once, but twice this week. The Madeira Beach Rec Center was looking for a unique summer camp activity for their kids. The Old Salt was happy to help provide a fun filled fishing morning complete with all the goods needed, rods and reels, bait, tackle and a volunteer staff that could teach the kids how to bait their lines, cast and catch a fish, for many, their first fish!

IMG_0411“There were a few kids that arrived in the morning, rod in hand, ready to go. Others had never touched a fishing pole before. One thing was for sure, excitement was in the air,”said Jill Foraker, Old Salt Board Member. The kids received some simple instructions before heading outside: How to cast, try not to hook the person next to you, etc. The real learning took place on the seawall when they were putting squid on their hooks and casting beyond the rocks so they didn’t get their lines stuck. It didn’t take long before fish were flying over the seawall, literally. From Pinfish to Flounder and everything in between, the kids caught it all. “It’s that hands on engagement, that one first fish that can hook a kid for life,” says Foraker.

It’s with opportunities such as this that the Old Salt can introduce a child to the world of fishing, which is a large part of the Old Salt Mission. Their slogan is, When you live in a place surrounded by water, fishing is more then a sport, it’s a lifestyle! Fishing is a fun, inexpensive, outdoor activity that teaches patience, discipline, and so much more. We live in one of the most ideal fishing locations in the world and should take advantage of it. Old Salt aims to hook as many kids as possible at an early age, hoping to provide them with a life long passion.

Each of the kids went home with an Old Salt and Sea Tow of Tampa Bay Goody Bag and a Fishing Rod!

One Response to Old Salt Fishing Foundation Gets Kids Fishing at Summer Camp

  1. I am looking for a team who will teach our church’s children, ages kindergarten through 5th grade, the basics of fishing at our on-site pond over an 8-week series. The fishing lesson would take place two times per 65-minute service at our 8:30 a.m. service on Sundays. The idea: teach the younger kids (K-2nd) fishing skills from 8:40-9:10. These children would then re-enter the church for their Bible story and lesson. The older kids (3rd-5th) get their Bible story and lesson during the time the younger kids are fishing. At 9:10, the older kids are at the pond learning their fishing lesson. They would now re enter the church for dismissal to parents.
    The series begins in January.
What we provide: MONEY, the Bible lesson, the story, worship, and VOLUNTEERS to help you.
