Capt. Greg’s Space Coast Fishing Report – April 2021

Last Month’s Action
What a great March for Spring Breakers.

Yes the sea conditions kept us in close a good amount of the time but it really didn’t matter because Spring Breakers just want to have fun. This Spring Break our jobs as captains were very important. We had so many families visiting our area to escape locked down states and to feel the sunshine, soaking in glorious vitamin D, escape the insanity to get a since of normalcy again. As a captain and all the Sea Leveler captains we took this to heart and tried to go above giving it our all every trip. We ran a little over 200 trips this March and met a lot of great people. We thank you for choosing us and we feel your pain. We are thankful that our governor and Florida has stood strong and that we were able to be here so you could get away from it all for a little bit.

Shark fishing along the beach was on another level of epic with sharks of all sizes and variety. The cobia run along the beach was as good as you can expect in this day and age with a half a dozen days providing great action seeing a lot of manta rays and a few fish. We had a few days of good mahi fishing immediately following wind and big seas. The king mackerel showed in epic fashion when we had more than 3 consecutive calm days in a row. Bottom fishing for amberjacks was great if you could manage them past the sandbar sharks and big vermillion snappers were always happy to make the fish box look good.

April Near Shore Fishing Forecast
We will continue to have a lot of white baits such as threadfins and hopefully we will get some pogies to show. The shark fishing should remain very good but we do have some nasty seas coming toward the beginning of the month so it might slow way down until we get calm and collected again. Spanish mackerel and bluefish will remain good as long as the threadfins stay concentrated throughout the inlet and buoy line. Triple tail on the buoys will be good and snook fishing the tide changes on the jetties will remain good. With any luck this front at the beginning of the month will halt the manta rays giving us a little more time on the cobia but I wouldn’t count on it.

April Offshore Fishing Forecast
Here we go with the most glorious months ahead here in the Space Coast. I can’t wait to settle into calm seas and no wind. I hope it happens this month and doesn’t wait until June. Let the seas dictate your fishing this month. Calm days immediately following rough seas are going to create defined edges and make for good trolling days, especially for mahi. Once we settle into calm days then the best catches will come from reefs and wrecks 70 to 100ft. Nice size king mackerel show in April so they are going to provide for some awesome action.

We will see a few sailfish, cobia, black fin tuna, mahi & wahoo mixed in with the kings. Bottom fishing for mangrove, mutton and lane snapper can also be on point in April. A lot of great days are made by anchoring up and targeting mangroves while float lining live baits out the back. This is a great way to get a mixed variety. Remember that bottom fishing for keepers is a numbers game. You can’t let the red snappers and sharks wear you out. You have to keep moving and fishing through them to get keeper species.

April is tuna time! If you ever wanted to go to the East Side of the Gulf Stream and give yourself a chance at a fishing trip of a life time then this is your month. This is still fishing and can have its slow days but this is the month that gives you the best odds at that perfect fish catching cocktail to have a epic catch of yellow fin tuna, black fin tuna and mahi. Everything is right you just have to pull the trigger and keep our fingers crossed that we get a weather window to make it happen.
